This study shows that East Asians tend to focus on the eys when deciphering emotions, while Westerners scan the whole face. They have a chart showing the emoticons in the East vs the West that’s interesting. “The Eastern emoticons are not only the right way up but focus on the eyes, whilst in the West the mouth is important.”
